The Occupational Therapy Assistant program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 6116 Executive Boulevard, Suite 200, North Bethesda, MD, 20852-4929. ACOTE's telephone number c/o AOTA is (301) 652-6611 and its web address is www.acoteonline.org.

Graduates will be able to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapy assistant administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA). Many states, including Missouri, require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT certification examination.

Note: Some fieldwork and employment sites require criminal background checks, child abuse clearance checks, vaccination requirements, etc. in order for students to participate in fieldwork and employment activities. A felony conviction may affect a graduate's ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination and/or may prevent an individual from obtaining a license to practice. Students may wish to contact the appropriate regulatory body for additional information PRIOR to enrolling in a program of study. Information obtained through various screening procedures may prevent entry into the OTA program.

Program results from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) can be found online at https://www.nbcot.org/Educators-Folder/SchoolPerformance.

Note: All OTA students must complete Level II fieldwork within 18 months following completion of academic preparation.

Occupational Outlook

28%
Employment of occupational therapy assistants and aides is projected to grow 28 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTA) are in high demand because patients stay less time in the hospital, and people in general live longer and survive catastrophic illness and accidents. Additionally, the importance of people with chronic conditions being able to remain well and in the community is of growing interest in our communities and nationwide. The OTA is uniquely qualified to help address these vital issues facing our world today. As a result, more people are finding the need for OT services. As changes in healthcare continue, the need for OTAs will continue to rise.

Salary Outlook

In the state of Missouri, employees working as occupational therapy assistants earn a median annual wage of $64,850.
Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, earnings increase significantly as a worker’s degree of education rises.

Occupational Therapy Careers

One of the greatest advantages of a career as an occupational therapy assistant is the wide variety of opportunities available to graduates. Many occupational therapy assistants choose to help children thrive in the “occupations” of childhood—learning, playing, and growing. Some work in schools with students who have learning disabilities, behavioral problems, cerebral palsy, or Down syndrome. Occupational therapy assistants also work with individuals in their homes, community centers, rehabilitation hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living centers, and nursing homes. In these settings, they help people with traumatic injuries, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, or mental health problems learn to live productive lives through the use of meaningful occupations.
