Frequently Asked Questions

How does my student get started?

The first step is to complete the admissions application, which can be completed at any time of year. SCC maintains an open admissions policy, which means everyone is accepted to the college. (But there are additional admissions criteria for select academic programs!)

What can I do to help my student be successful at SCC?
As a family member, you can help and support your student by listening and encouraging them to make their own decisions and to seek help when they need it. For many students, this is a new experience. SCC has great student services designed to assist your student in reaching their academic goals.  Check out our tips for college success.
Why can’t SCC tell me anything about my student?
Under the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), once the student enrolls at a college, the rights to privacy transfer directly to the student. Students may determine with whom they want SCC to share their information. To authorize access to their records, students must complete a FERPA Release form in Academic Advising (Social Sciences Building room 2201).
Can I get a copy of my student’s grades?
In short, unless you ask your student directly, you can’t. Under FERPA, we can’t give them to you, and we don’t mail report cards. Students can access their grades using SCC Connection, an online resource and communications system at SCC.
How much does it cost to attend SCC?
Community college is an amazing education value. Tuition costs vary. Current tuition and fees are listed here.
How do we apply for financial aid?
The first step is to set up an FSA ID and password then complete the Free Application for Student Federal Aid (FAFSA). Complete instructions and links are located in the Financial Aid section.
Where’s the class schedule?
SCC Connection or in the College Catalog. If you are having difficulty finding what you are searching for, don't hesitate to visit Academic Advising for assistance.
What’s the College Success Seminar (College 101)?
In this class, your student will learn about College resources and services, how to utilize SCC Connection, and learn how to navigate the learning management system used in their courses. Students walk away with insight and skills that will benefit them the rest of their academic (and professional) careers, including: financial literacy, time management and study skills, degree planning, and career planning information.
When’s the registration deadline?
The dates vary from semester to semester, but typically, fall and summer registration begins in April and spring registration begins in October. For the most current dates, visit the academic calendar.
How does my student get help with scheduling?
Academic Advisors are available to help your student understand degree requirements, select courses based on his or her goals, and create an academic plan. For more information, visit Academic Advising.
What if my student just wants to take a summer class?
Academic Advisors are available to help your student understand degree requirements, select courses based on his or her goals, and create an academic plan. For more information, visit Academic Advising.
