Magda Carbajal
Magda Carbajal
Magda Carbajal, 2018 English as a Second Language (ESL) student honoree, is a civil engineer, former engineering professor and has even started one company in Peru. She came to St. Charles Community College looking for high-quality teaching and an ESL program that fit with her career goals.
“When Mrs. Casillo (lead AEL instructor) introduced me to speak on behalf of the students of the ESL program at graduation, she reminded me of when I first arrived in this country and how far I’ve come,” said Magda.” I am here achieving the dream of my life. Taking ESL classes is the first step to be able to work in my field in the U.S.”
During her time in the ESL program, Magda experienced different languages, cultures and societies different from her own.
“We can relate to classmates who are from different parts of the world. We do it by immersing ourselves in each other’s cultures, by learning from each other’s stories and by erasing the stereotypes and misconceptions that too often divide us.”
The more time Magda spent studying in the ESL program, the more comfortable she became with herself and college life.
“The doors at SCC are always open. It would be a shame to limit yourself.”
Magda, who was awarded with an Attendance Award and a SCC Foundation Non-credit ESL Scholarship, will be studying engineering at SCC this fall.
“It’s not going to be an easy road, but I’m not afraid. I want to learn everything I can and be an excellent addition to any team.”
