At the age of four, Angela Maxvill was able to see that soccer wasn’t just a hobby, but a passion that would shape her to be the person she’s become.
The zest for athletics runs deep into Angela’s family. All four of her siblings are active soccer players, among other sports; her mom was a cheerleader in high school; and her Grandpa Maxvill played shortstop for the Cardinals and eventually was the general manager of the team.
“You’d think with baseball running in our blood, our family would play baseball and softball, but no. To this day, I’ve never played softball before. No matter what, I’m dedicated to soccer,” the Cougar sophomore said.
Angela played for the same coach from the age of 6 until 14 for her Catholic parish, St. Joseph Cottleville. With that team, she won three City County titles in a row from sixth to eighth grade.
Taking her soccer career to the next level, Angela joined the soccer team at her high school, St. Dominic, and began playing club soccer for Missouri Rush Soccer Club. Due to a knee injury, she was only able to play two years, but that didn’t stop her from wanting to further pursue her passion in college.
“I never thought playing college soccer was a realistic dream, but coach Josh Tyler made my dream a reality.”
Angela was originally admitted into the University of Missouri–St. Louis’ nursing program, but knew that would mean giving up soccer for good due to a chaotic course load.
“Although passing up a direct admittance into the program was a hard decision to make, it was the right one because it allowed me to continue playing soccer and save money,” she said. “By choosing this route I knew I’d have to work extremely hard to keep my GPA up to better my chances of acceptance later on.”
Believing that SCC’s soccer team would be her last team ever, Angela made her time on the field count. She was awarded the Most Scholarly Athlete and Scougar awards in 2015, Academic All-Conference 2015-2016, Most Improved Player in 2016 and was a 2016 stat leader in goals. Her hard work paid off academically, too. Angela was recently re-accepted into UMSL’s nursing program. She will be transferring to the university this fall to continue her education and plans on graduating with a BSN.
“It wasn’t until our last game when we lost in double overtime to go to Nationals that I realized I wasn’t ready to give up soccer. During that game, I played with more passion than I had ever before and when the final whistle blew, I knew I wasn’t ready to be done just yet.”
Despite thinking the nursing school course load and playing soccer would be too much to handle, Angela did her research and found out that UMSL’s current soccer team has a couple of players in the nursing program. Giving her a new outlook, Angela has decided to give the D2 team at UMSL a shot.
“Although I know it’s going to be extremely demanding and difficult, I’ve accepted the challenge,” she said. “I would regret it if I didn’t at least try. With extreme focus and the help of my fellow teammates, I think I can make this dream a reality.”
After her time on the field has officially come to an end, Angela plans on becoming a traveling nurse so she can travel and experience new places before settling down in one place as a labor and delivery nurse.
“SCC’s soccer team taught me commitment, dedication, passion, acceptance and so much more. This is my team, my family, and the game will never be the same without having all of these incredible, unique women next to me on the field.”
