It’s been said that music changes the way you think. Robert Jones might agree. 

Taking a piano lesson at a community college led Robert to his current position as a part-time adjunct English instructor and English learning specialist in the ACE Tutoring Center at St. Charles Community College.

“That piano class led to an English composition class. It was my teacher in that class that convinced me to stay in school.” 

Robert describes his college experience as a “fairytale.” He was involved in Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and received scholarships from USA Today All-Academic Team, Cola-Cola Foundation and Missouri Community College Association.  

“While I was in school, I discovered my passion for teaching, leadership and serving others. Because of that, I decided to return to a community college and help others have that same “fairytale” experiences that I had.” 

Now a retired firefighter from the St. Louis Fire Department, Robert teaches through storytelling in many instances. 

“Being a firefighter for 26 years, I have plenty of interesting stories that I use to inspire, motivate and connect with my students.”

Robert continues to be a trainer for the fire department, which has given him the skills to allow for the development of pedagogy, which incorporates visual, physical, social, audible and comical styles of instruction.

“The fire department taught me to be very clear, concise and correct in my teaching method, because poor instruction could lead to injury or death in that line of work.”

Robert, who has both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in English, plans on continuing his education and earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Education – Leadership in Higher Education Administration degree. 

“During my time at SCC, I hope to have a huge, positive impact on my students and to always remember that without students I would not be able to do what I love.”
