Christina Usher

Being the first person in her family to attend college, Christina Usher had a lot of questions and worries while searching for the right school for herself. 

“I didn’t really know what I was doing,” Christina said. “I was worried that I wouldn’t be ready to attend a university right away, and I wasn’t sure that I would be able to afford it, either.”

Lucky for her, Christina had a friend who attended SCC and had a great experience. So she visited campus and started to look into scholarship options.

“Thankfully I received a scholarship from the Board of Trustees that covered my tuition. I also received a few smaller scholarships during my time at SCC that covered the cost of my books.” 

A member of Phi Theta Kappa, Christina graduated in May 2010 with an Associate of Arts, summa cum laude.

Christina has continued to add degrees under her belt since leaving SCC, earning a B.S. in psychology and a minor in mathematics at Missouri State University, an M.A. in psychology from the University of Missouri – St. Louis, a Graduate Certificate in Institutional Research and, beginning spring 2017, she will be starting a second Master’s degree program in higher education.

During Christina’s job hunt, she found herself consistently checking SCC’s employment listings.

“I think I was curious to see if there could be a fit for me at the institution that really inspired me to take the path that I did.” 

During her search, Christina saw the opening for Associate Director of Institutional Research.

“I read the job description and was instantly excited by it. The job seemed like the perfect mix of two of my passions – research and academia, so I applied for it!” 

Now on the other side of things at SCC, Christina enjoys working and making SCC as great as it can be for students to benefit from it as she did.

“I also teach a psychology course part-time, so being in front of the students instead of being the student, while surreal at first, is a lot of fun.”

For students who are starting out where she was just six years ago, Christina says to stay positive and don’t give up.

“Make sure to explore all of your options, and never be afraid to ask questions. Remember that the college is there to serve you, so take full advantage of all the services that are available to you. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the faculty, staff and resources that SCC offered me.”
