A+ Scholarship Recipient  |  Alumni  |  Student  |  Transferred To Four-Year Institution

The A+ Scholarship Program brought Kristen Flood to SCC, but it was the writing program and overall experience that kept her here.

“I wanted to be able to get an associate’s degree before going to a four-year university, so I did A+,” Flood said.

During her time at SCC, Flood said she spent a lot of time trying to find herself.

“I wanted to be a teacher and an author, but I wasn’t sure which path to take. SCC’s writing program helped me realize I could be both.”

One of SCC’s Early Childhood professors, Dr. Linda Estes, also played a role in Flood’s growth and success.

“My favorite professor was Dr. Estes. She pushed me to be a better educator, and now I’m a better parent because of that. She really helped me on my journey to find myself.” 

Now an SCC alum and published author, Flood is working as a substitute teacher for both the St. Charles and Orchard Farm school districts.

“I couldn’t have gotten the job if it weren’t for all of the field experience and education I got from SCC.”

Flood plans on continuing her education even further at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

“During my last semester at SCC, I duel enrolled at UMSL and have been going there ever since. I hope to earn my bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education with an emphasis on Special Education.”

Even with plans of earning her bachelor’s degree, Flood still plans on returning to SCC in the near future. 

“I can’t recommend SCC enough. It offers a smooth transition from high school to college, the teachers are great and care about their programs,” she said. “If you don’t know who you want to be just yet, you can start by finding yourself at SCC. I have one more class to take at SCC so I can earn an Associates of Arts and Teaching.”
