Alumni | Straight To SCC From High School | Student | Transferred To Four-Year Institution
SCC student Etedal Kaid was up for a challenge when she decided to dedicate her free time to community service.
From volunteering at several walks and judging high school club competitions to tutoring private school students and volunteering at the SCC Child Development Center, Etedal strives to make a difference in the community.
“Taking part in volunteering has taught me compassion and understanding,” said Etedal. “One of my favorite things about community service is that there are always opportunities and choices around you.”
In total, Etedal completed 88 hours of volunteer service during the fall 2014 semester as part of the Semester of Service Program established by Missouri Campus Compact. Her time earned her the Community Changer distinction in the program.
As an SCC Foundation scholarship and Board of Trustees scholarship recipient, Etedal studied accounting and finance. She chose SCC over other colleges because she wanted to earn her degree debt-free.
“Whether you go to an Ivy League school or a community college, you choose how to make the most of your experience there – how much knowledge you want to grasp, and how active and happy you will be,” said Etedal. “In the end, it’s all about finding yourself in the world and discovering what you are truly passionate about.”
Etedal was also a member of the SCC chapters of Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honor society for two-year colleges, and Phi Beta Lambda, the largest collegiate-level business origination in the United States.
After SCC, Etedal transferred to St. Louis University (SLU) with a full scholarship, where she earned a bachelor’s and master's degree in accounting.
During her time at SLU, she stayed active in the community by volunteering at least 40 hours a semester. She also completed two internships in public accounting. At the completion of her internship, Etedal accepted a full-time offer to start as an audit staff member in the fall.
"Post-graduation, I am using my time to study for my CPA exam and to volunteer as a tax preparer through STL TAP, an organization that helps file tax returns for low income families," she said.
