Rex McKanry, SCC assistant professor of computer science, brings a wide range of real world experience to the classroom.
McKanry teaches a variety of computer classes including data processing, Java programming, mobile application development and advanced Java applications.
“Teaching gives me the joy of sharing my passion for learning and technology with others,” McKanry said.
He employs a team-based learning style in his Introduction to Data Processing class. He divides the class into teams, each having a project manager and they complete research projects related to what they are reading in class.
McKanry’s interest in student success has expanded to other areas of the college as well.
As a Navy veteran, he has become involved with the Veterans Committee on campus, which coordinates SCC’s Veterans Week activities, and is involved in the college’s long range planning teams.
He received his associate degree in electrical engineering technology from the Community College of Rhode Island while serving in the Navy.
“I was inspired by my teachers when I went to the community college,” said McKanry. “That’s when I decided to get into education and teach.”
McKanry went on to get a bachelor’s degree in software engineering from Carroll University and a master’s degree in instructional technology from Cardinal Stritch University.
After 11 years in the Navy, McKanry held positions ranging from bench technician at Sears, utility electrician at Caterpillar and technical trainer for Quadtech International.
