Stefanie Clynes
Stefanie Clynes
Inspired by a class she took at SCC, Stefanie Clynes is on her way to a career in public relations.
That inspirational class was Intro to PR with Darren Osburn, professor of speech and communications.
“Mr. Osburn was very influential and I became more confident in my abilities,” Stefanie said. “He believed in me and saw something more in me. I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I left SCC.”
In class, Stefanie worked on two PR campaigns, getting hands-on experience in things like focus groups and video. Then she got involved with SCC’s student newspaper, the SCCougar, and took on the task of marketing the paper in social media.
“Stefanie is a motivated individual who quickly understood the value of social media and getting experience while in college,” Osburn said. “She took it upon herself to get the word out about the new student paper – from Facebook to scrawling chalk messages on the campus sidewalks, she made things happen.”
Stefanie took the experience with her when she transferred to Webster University, where she joined the student newspaper staff. Webster created a PR and marketing position just for her. That role eventually expanded to a marketing manager and then to a business manager for the paper, where she worked closely with clients and even supervised a couple of positions.
Stefanie graduated from Webster with a bachelor’s degree in public relations. She interned with Friends of Kids With Cancer during the spring of 2012 and was a special events intern for the St. Louis Cardinals during the summer of 2012 where she helped plan events like weddings, corporate parties and retirement parties.
Stefanie continued with her schooling, graduating with a Master of Arts in marketing in May of 2014. After graduation, she furthered her career in communication by landing a job at the Missouri Botanical Garden, where she worked until Jan. 2016, as events and communications specialist. Stefanie is currently working back at Friends of Kids With Cancer, the local nonprofit that started her off in the communication field.
