Free English as a Second Language classes for non-native speakers are available for all proficiency levels. The classes focus on improving English conversational skills for home and workplace literacy.

ESL classes help beginning, intermediate and advanced students improve English proficiency skills in the following areas:
• Reading, writing, speaking and listening
• Grammar, vocabulary and idioms
• American culture, history and government
• Citizenship instruction and mock interviews 

Free English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes

ESL classes offered are listed below. During registration, students will choose at least 2 but no more than 4 classes to attend per week. 

ESL REGISTRATION

Our school year runs from August through May, and we register new students each month from August to March. 
Registration is closed for the 2023-24 school year. Registration and classes for the 2024-25 school year will begin in August 2024. Check back here in July for August registration dates!

ALL ESL REGISTRATION will be face-to-face. Students can choose to attend classes Face-to-Face (F2F) or virtually by Zoom (V), subject to availability.

ELIGIBILITY: To register, students must be at least 17 years old, not enrolled in high school, must live in Missouri, and cannot be in the U.S. on an F-1 (student) Visa.

PLEASE NOTE: Children are not permitted in Adult Education registration or class sessions.

Students must attend one registration session before attending class. Registration lasts four (4) full hours and students must arrive before the scheduled start time. No late arrivals will be accepted.

To enroll in a Special Interest Class, students must be currently enrolled in an English as a Second Language class. Classes are designated with a (V) for virtual or (F2F) for face-to-face.

College and Career English

Tuesday, 6-9 p.m. (F2F)

Citizenship

Friday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. (V)

Conversation

Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. and Thursday, 12:30-2:30 p.m. (F2F)

Pronunciation

Friday, 12:30-2:30 p.m. (V)

Writing

Thursday, 6-9 p.m. (V)

Healthcare for ESL

Wednesday, 12:30-2:30 p.m. (F2F)

Special Interest Classes

To enroll in a Special Interest Class, students must be currently enrolled in an English as a Second Language class.

College and Career English

This class is for students who wish to perfect their English at the highest level for jobs or who wish to enter a US university to have a degree. The class will teach how to effectively blend verb tenses, punctuate correctly, analyze advanced readings, advanced grammar and vocabulary, academic writing, pronunciation, advanced vocabulary and more. There will be a connection with practices from the TOEFL test.

Get to Know the USA: The Road to Citizenship

This class offers an overview of the history, geography, customs, traditions, holidays, parts and functions of the U.S. government and general life in the U.S. to all levels of ESL students. Students will improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills while exploring the USA. The instructor addresses the 100 questions on the U.S. Citizenship Test and prepares prospective citizens to take the test in the future. This specialty class covers all aspects of the process of naturalization – eligibility requirements, needed documents, application forms and mock interviews with test practice. This is a new look at U.S. Citizenship – a cultural discovery of the USA! 

Conversation

Conversation classes focus on communication and fluency. The purpose of the class is to assist ESL students to communicate effectively in English. Conversation classes offer a way to improve the speaking skill in a relaxed setting while discussing a great variety of day-to-day topics. This class will help students develop listening and pronunciation skills.

Pronunciation

ESL students will have the opportunity to practice pronunciation techniques focusing on articulation of blends and sounds unique to the English language. Students will also learn origins of English words as well as expand vocabulary knowledge.

Writing

English language learners will have the opportunity to practice writing conventions and grammar rules specific to the English language. Students will get more in-depth instruction in advanced writing along with focused practice.

Healthcare for ESL

Healthcare classes for ESL students are taught within the context of healthcare. This class will focus on key skills (reading, writing, comprehension and speaking) while explaining and presenting subjects in the healthcare area. Students attending this class must test at Level 4 in at least 3 skills on the ESL assessment tests. This class will prepare the students to work in the medical field or to enter a CNA program.

Integrated Education & Training Classes

To enroll in an IET class, students must be registered in an English as a Second Language or High School Equivalency class. These classes may have a tuition charge and/or eligibility requirements. Tuition assistance may be available. Call 636-922-8313 for information.

Certified Logistics Associate/Certified Logistics Technician

An industry specialist will introduce students to the basics of logistics in CLA (Certified Logistics Associate) and expand on those concepts in CLT (Certified Logistics Technician) as well as prepare students for the credential exams. Students will gain the skills needed to be successful in all areas of logistic environments. The class will meet two evenings per week (TBD).
