English/Literature

We believe in the power of words – to transform, to heal, to inform, to illuminate.

Our dedicated faculty lead students through rigorous and engaging courses in composition, creative writing, and literature designed to strengthen their efforts in any course of study or profession. We offer creative writing classes that invite students to explore a variety of genres at both introductory and advanced levels. Students enrolled in our literature classes encounter texts representing and reflecting all that the world is, has been, and could become – while composition classes encourage students to develop and refine rhetorical skills that will support their future endeavors. No matter the course, students enrolled in SCC English become thinkers, talkers, analysts, critics, and scholars who learn to see the world from a variety of new perspectives. Come join us in this world of words.

Outstanding students of English have many opportunities for recognition at SCC. The English Department recognizes exemplary student writing through the annual awards of The Annie Dillard Award (for creative nonfiction) and The E.B. White Award (for expository writing) which are awarded in the spring semester. The department also puts out a literary journal, Mid Rivers Review, celebrating student writing which awards The Jim Haba Award (for poetry) and The Daniel Woodrell Award (for fiction.) Ask your instructors for details.

In addition to transfer paths for English majors to four-year-universities, the SCC English Department also offers an Associate of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, an Associate of Arts in Technical Writing as well as a Creative Writing certificate.

What is the English, A.A?

An associate degree in English helps students develop advanced reading and writing skills while focusing on a particular area of individual interest like literature, creative writing, or technical writing. Participants in the English program become proficient in skills that are universally beneficial to all other disciplines. These courses help students to write effectively and persuasively, hone their critical thinking skills, and cultivate their understanding and appreciation of literature and creative writing in the context of history and culture. Students earning an A.A. in English at SCC may take courses in composition, critical thinking, creative writing, technical writing, and a range of literature courses, including British and American surveys, Mythology, World Literature, and Gender in Literature. An English major leads directly to careers in teaching, journalism, publishing and editing, technical writing, public relations, and advertising. It is also excellent preparation for careers in law, communications, government, and a variety of business environments.

What is the Creative Writing, A.F.A?

Students completing an Associate of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing at St. Charles Community College will spend two years honing their craft as practitioners of the art of creative writing.  Through workshops in specific genres as well as courses in publishing and literary study, AFA students at SCC become well-rounded writers prepared for the rigors of a four-year BFA or BA program in English and Creative Writing.  Graduates of creative writing programs go on to a variety of rich, fulfilling careers as novelists, screenwriters, poets, literary agents, editors, and teachers of the art they love.  In addition, they hone their understanding of the many approaches to the writing process, enrich their sense of the skill and artwork that goes into any creative work, and become well-rounded individuals who learn to see the world and the people in it with a complex, understanding eye.

Mid Rivers Review is the college literary and art journal for St. Charles Community College. Contributors hail from the United States and beyond.
