SCC Track and Field Teams Receive First All-American Honors
Published: 05/26/2022
The men’s and women’s track and field teams brought home a lot of hardware from the 2022 National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Championships in Troy, New York, in May. The men’s team took sixth with 47 points. The women also were successful with 41 points and an eighth-place finish.
Jonah McHaffie led the men’s team with a first-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase and 5000-meter run. This led to McHaffie being a first-team All-American in both events. Tevon Williamson finished his season as a second-team All-American with second-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles, and the high jump.
McHaffie was also named the NJCAA DIII Male National Track Athlete of The Year, by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association.
On the women’s side, Grace Bostic led the way, also becoming a first-team All-American with her first-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. She also had a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, earning second-team All-American. Julianne Hanson finished as an honorable-mention in the 400-meter dash, as she took third in the race.
In addition, SCC had individuals and relay teams earn medals as 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th place finishers.
This was the first trip to the national NJCAA Championship for the Cougars, and Bostic and McHaffie are the first track and field All-Americans in college history. The Cougars’ inaugural season began in 2020 but was canceled due to Covid-19.
