St. Charles Community College moves classes and services online until March 30
Published: 03/12/2020
In response to the rapidly changing situation concerning the coronavirus, St. Charles Community College will initiate precautionary safety measures related to social isolation.
St. Charles Community College will restrict access to its main campus March 16-19 during the college’s Spring Break. SCC will continue offering essential student services remotely throughout the week. The campus was already scheduled to be closed on Friday, March 20, for all faculty, staff and students. Classes will proceed as normal March 13-14.
Additionally, SCC will restrict access to its main campus March 23-28. During this time, all face-to-face instruction and services will be temporarily suspended and will be provided online. Resources will be made available to students, faculty and staff to ensure a smooth transition to online classes and services. While leadership will continue to monitor the situation, students are expected to resume on-campus classes Monday, March 30.
“St. Charles Community College does not have any known coronavirus cases on campus,” said Barbara Kavalier, Ph.D., St. Charles Community College president. “We believe this temporary measure will allow our students to continue their education while minimizing their risk to any possible exposure.”
Essential student services will still be available remotely. The financial aid, admissions and academic advising departments, among others, will be fully staffed; however, they will not have a physical presence on campus. Students needing assistance during this period are encouraged to make initial contact with campus services via email or phone and should not come to campus.
“The Centers for Disease Control is recommending people take extra measures to avoid large crowds or groups of people,” explained Kavalier. “With more than 6,000 students who visit our campuses on a regular basis, we felt it was important to take this proactive step.”
The St. Charles Community College Police Department will remain on campus, and thorough sanitation and cleaning will be conducted by the housekeeping staff.
All on-campus events and activities have been canceled until March 30.
St. Charles Community College is in direct contact with the St. Charles County Health Department regarding any local developments and will continue to follow Center for Disease Control guidelines regarding the coronavirus.
At this time, SCC has preemptively canceled all study abroad opportunities for the summer and fall semesters. All college-related travel has also been suspended.
