Charles Community College will host a portion of the Isreal-Palestine film series – St. Louis Voices From the Holy Land – Saturday, April 20, and Monday, April 22.

At each showing there will also be a question and answer session. On April 20, the question and answer session will be moderated by Mark Chmiel, Ph.D., and on April 22, the question and answer session will be moderated by Louise Bullock.

Movies that SCC will host are:

  • 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20 – Life in Occupied Palestine
In “Life in Occupied Palestine,” Anna Baltzer, a graduate of Columbia University and the Jewish-American granddaughter of Holocaust refugees, documents her experience as a volunteer with the International Women's Peace Service in the West Bank. Baltzer provides a straightforward account of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while chronicling the almost unbearable living conditions of Palestinians under the occupation. It’s an accessible introduction to a difficult subject for American students.
  • 1 p.m. Monday, April 22 – Occupation of the American Mind
Israel's ongoing military occupation of Palestinian territory and repeated invasions of the Gaza strip have triggered a fierce backlash against Israeli policies virtually everywhere in the world – except the United States. The “Occupation of the American Mind” takes an eye-opening look at this critical exception, zeroing in on pro-Israel public relations efforts within the U.S. Narrated by Roger Waters and featuring leading observers of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and U.S. media culture, the film explores how the Israeli government, the U.S. government, and the pro-Israel lobby have joined forces, often with very different motives, to shape American media coverage of the conflict in Israel's favor. From the U.S.-based public relations campaigns that emerged in the 1980s to today, the film provides a sweeping analysis of Israel's decades-long battle for the hearts, minds, and tax dollars of the American people in the face of widening international condemnation of its increasingly right-wing policies.

The series is co-sponsored by SCC as well as St. Louis Friends of Bethlehem and St. Francis Xavier Social Ministry.

Supporters include Aquinas Institute of Theology; Incarnate Word International Novitiate; Just Faith College Church Class of 2019; Racine Dominican Associates of St. Louis; Veterans for Peace Chapter 61; American Muslims for Palestine; Euphrates Institute, St. Louis Chapter; Institute for Peace and Justice; Peace Economy Project; Loretto Peace Committee; and Faith and Labor Alliance.
