English department publishes latest edition of Mid Rivers Review

The English department of St. Charles Community College has just released its latest volume of Mid Rivers Review, the college’s annual literary journal.

Mid Rivers Review 2018 contains poetry, prose and photography from students of SCC’s creative writing program as well as from many others. The collection begins with “15 Things You Should Know About Being a Plus-Sized Biracial Christian Feminist,” an award-winning poem by Kayleigh Oliver, and ends with “L’apelle Du Vide [The Call of the Void],” a bilingual verse by Kolebe Shanks.

Every year, the journal honors two of its contributors – one for poetry, and the other for fiction. This volume’s James Haba Award for poetry goes to Kayleigh Oliver, a recent SCC graduate who is presently working toward a degree at Southeast Missouri State University. Oliver’s intrepid work is represented with five poems. The Daniel Woodrell award for fiction this year is conferred to Alex (just “Alex”), whose “Marbles” is “wonderfully disturbing,” said Michael Kuelker, SCC English professor.

The cover of Mid Rivers Review 2018 is based on original artwork by SCC art professor Brian David Smith, whose Enfoque – Spanish for “focus” – is an oil on canvas painting. The journal was edited by Kuelker.

The publication is available for purchase at the SCC Bookstore.

Mid Rivers Review is published once a year and accepts submissions year-round.

Mid Rivers Review 2019 will have a special section devoted to Missouri writing ­­– representations of Missouri in its diversity in poetry and prose, photographs and other images. The theme for the volume will be “Here and Elsewhere” – “here” refers to Missouri-oriented writing, while the “elsewhere” encompasses a broad range of other writings. Already confirmed for Mid Rivers Review 2019 is an interview with Ozark novelist Daniel Woodrell, author of Winter’s Bone and other novels that have earned international acclaim.
