International Festival and Market – Nov. 20
Published: 10/18/2019
In honor of International Education Week, St. Charles Community College will host its inaugural International Festival and Market – from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20. The festival will be held in the Daniel J .Conoyer Social Sciences Building on the college’s campus at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Dr. in Cottleville.
Simulating an International Open-Air Market, participants can browse a variety of booths including food vendors from various ethnic restaurants offering free samples. Global craft vendors will also be selling unique gift items, and SCC International students will interactively sharing facts and insights about their countries. Multicultural music and entertainment, including Japanese drummers, Latin dancing, a global choir and the SCC Chamber Choir, will add to the festivities from the stage.
“We want to bring a multicultural experience to our students and community, in the form of a fun, interesting and informative festival,” said Martha Garcia Kampen, chief diversity and compliance officer. “More than 550 international or foreign-born English-learning students representing 37 countries currently study at St. Charles Community College. They are all very proud of their countries and want to share their cultures with others. It is a very enriching experience.”
The event is free and open to the public.
Meanwhile, English as a Second Language students will present posters about their countries of origin on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 6-9 p.m. in the SSB Student Lounge. An open international “open-mic night” will follow. On Thursday, Nov. 21, there will be a "Discover the World" event in the SSB Auditorium. The event, from 2:30-4 p.m., will focus on education abroad and international opportunities.
