SCC to Celebrate Women's History Month

St. Charles Community College will host a series of events in honor of Women’s History Month. The events include slam poetry, films, panels, lectures and more. All events are free and open to the public.

#BlackHairMatters with Dr. MaKesha L. Harris, Ed.D.

This presentation will illustrate the effects of hairism and stereotype-threat that have influenced the self-identity development of many black women. Dr. Harris will give voice to the lived experiences of a group of black women she recently interviewed for her 2017 research study entitled, “#BlackHairMatters: Exploring the Relationship between Black Women Students and Their Hair in Higher Education in the United States.”
#MeToo: An Open Mic Discussion on Sexual Assault and Rape, presented by Lisa Randoll, Instructor of American Government

Over the course of the past year, the #MeToo movement has empowered the victims of sexual assault and rape to come forward, share their stories and move towards changing our culture. Come join the conversation about how you feel about the movement and where we go from here.
Wonder Woman: Historical Heroine Suited (Up) for the 21st Century, with Bryonie Carter and Rachel McWhorter

Come join us for a discussion on last fall’s Wonder Woman film. We’ll learn a bit about the history of Diana Prince and her alter ego, her earliest connections to feminism and heroism in the United States and how she’s evolved to suit a more global idea of justice and gender equality in the 21st century. DC comics gear encouraged; photo booth with props will be available!
Spoken Word Artist: Ebony Stewart

Ebony Stewart is a touring performance artist and slam poet who has been active in the central Texas slam poetry scene and theater community for over a decade.

When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny. Rated PG-13. Free popcorn will be provided.
A Wrinkle in Time (2018)

Students can pick up one free ticket (with student ID) at the ADM Welcome Desk March 19-27. Additional tickets can be purchased for $5 at the Cashier’s window, ADM 1117.
Throughout the series of events, a Women’s History Month display titled “That’s What She Said” will be on display March 12-30 in the LRC lobby.
