SCC to Celebrate Black History Month

St. Charles Community College will host a series of events in honor of Black History Month. The events include films, a lecture, lunchtime musicians, Comedy Night and more. These events are sponsored by SCC’s Multicultural Programming Committee, Student Activities, Student Success and the Black Student Leadership Alliance (BSLA). All events are free and open to the public.

Dulcé Sloan is one of two comedians performing at Comedy Night on Saturday, Feb. 11.   

13^th film showing

13^th, a film exploring the history of racial inequality in the United States, will be screened at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in SSB 1102. 

“When Negro Food was in Vogue: Culinary Landscapes of African American Identity Formation” lecture

“When Negro Food was in Vogue: Culinary Landscapes of African American Identity Formation,” will be presented by Tandra Taylor at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, in the SSB auditorium.

“13^th” lecture

The lecture, “13^th or Slavery Reprised: On American Incarceration and the New Jim Crow,” will be presented by Rachel McWhorter at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, in the SSB auditorium.

Comedy Night

Comedians Paul Varghese and Dulcé Sloan will headline SCC’s Comedy Night on Saturday, Feb. 11. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m. in the FAB theater. The show is rated PG-13. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for SCC students with a valid ID. Purchase tickets online at stchastickets.com or through the SCC box office at 636-922-8050. 

Loving film showing

Loving, a film about an interracial couple in the 1950s, will be screened at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in the Private Dining Room, located in the Student Center. 

Lunchtime Musician

Lunchtime musicians D and Chi will play starting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, in Scooter’s Place in the Student Center. 

SCC Speaks Freely: “Being Black on the SCC Campus”

SCC Speaks Freely will discuss “Being Black on the SCC Campus” from 10-11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in SSB 1102. The forum will be moderated by Marvin Tobias and Kristin Thomas. Complimentary breakfast and snacks will be provided. 

Soul Food Luncheon

Students can grab free soul food with a valid student ID from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, in the College Center gym. Gilkey Pamoja Preparatory Academy will perform.
