SCC Women’s Soccer end regular season as No. 2 seed

St. Charles Community College’s Women’s Soccer finished the regular season with a 2-1 loss to No. 17 Indian Hills on Oct. 13 in the Cougars fourth double overtime game.

Indian Hills struck first with a breakaway goal that left Sam Garvilla, SCC goalkeeper, to fend for herself.

“The attacking player always has the advantage on break-a-ways,” Garvilla said. “She was very fast, and I’m pretty sure I miss judged the ball – I should have made the save.” 

After the first goal, SCC settled into a rhythm and was able to put Indian Hills on their heals quite a few times.

“We had some jitters we needed to work through,” said Jason Wyland, SCC Women’s Soccer assistant coach. “That goal settled them down and made them realize that there is work to be done.”

During the second half, there was a back and forth in which SCC outshot Indian Hills. SCC had three opportunities to put the game out of reach but wasn’t able to find the back of the net. With five minutes left in the game, Kirsten White finished a junk ball for her third goal of the season and sent the game into two 10-minute Golden Goal Overtime. Lauren Schmickley notched her fifth assist. 

It took 13 minutes of overtime for Indian Hills to grab the game winning goal, and their 14th win of the year.

“It was a heck of a game,” said Josh Tyler, SCC Women’s Soccer head coach. “I was really proud of the women. They battled and really could have came away with the win; we certainty had the opportunities to win the game.” 

The Cougars finished the regular season with an 8-4-3 record and will head into the Region XVI Tournament, hosted by Metropolian Community College-Blue River in Kansas City, Mo., as the No. 2 seed. They will face Metropolian Community College-Maple Woods at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28. With a win over Maple Woods, SCC would head into their fourth straight Region XVI Championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

SCC won the Region XVI Championship three times – 2010 and back-to-back in 2014 and 2015.

“We have had an odd season this year,” Tyler said. “We struggled to find our groove many games. We lost a few games we certainty shouldn’t have and tied games that should have been wins, but that is how the game works. The best team on the field does not always win. What matters is postseason now. What we did or did not do in the regular season no longer matters. Post season is win or go home. Our goal has been all year to make it back to nationals in November, and I think we have a heck of a shot of making it back.”

SCC made the National Tournament in 2014. The top 12 teams in the country make the national tournament each year.
