Shirley Lohmar appointed to SCC Board of Trustees

Published: 06/22/2015

A believer in the importance of education, Lohmar is a retired St. Charles School District elementary school principal. She taught at Monroe Elementary School for 16 years and was named Teacher of the Year for the district in 1998 – just before she was appointed principal at Blackhurst Elementary. She moved to the role of principal at Null Elementary when the district restructured in 2007.

Lohmar obtained a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology and elementary education from Southeast Missouri State University and a master’s degree in educational administration from Lindenwood University.

Bringing valuable experience to the board, Lohmar has been president of the Parkside Meadows Retirement Community Board of Directors, and the Church Council governing board at St. John United Church of Christ. She also held the position of chairman for the Charter Commission of the City of St. Charles in 1981 when the city successfully adopted a charter form of government.

"Public education is important because it is the foundation of a free society," said Lohmar. "It empowers people to live their lives to the fullest and reach their dreams, whatever that may be. It also creates character in an individual. It teaches us to value our culture and the culture of others."

For Lohmar, community college advocacy is a family tradition. Her son, County Prosecutor Timothy Lohmar, served on the SCC board from 2002-2011, and her late husband, William Lohmar, a former circuit judge, associate circuit judge and St. Charles municipal judge, served on the board from 2011-2015.

The SCC Board of Trustees is charged with the duty of fostering and maintaining the overall welfare of the college as well as approving the annual budget and expenditures of funds.

The six members of the St. Charles Community College Board of Trustees are elected citizens who serve six-year terms without pay.

St. Charles Community College is a public, comprehensive two-year community college with associate degrees and certificate programs in the arts, business, sciences and career-technical fields. SCC provides workforce training and community-based personal and professional development as well as cultural, recreational and entertainment opportunities. For more information, visit stchas.edu.
