Paint a Planter activity supports academics at SCC

Dan Porter, grounds supervisor, came up with the idea and was able to execute it with the help of SCC’s art department. 

“Kathleen Sanker, art professor, and Brian Alich, art technician, put forth the effort of the proposal, tracking and recruitment for Paint a Planter,” said Dan Porter. “This was no small task, and they put in a lot of effort and extra time on this project. They have also been working with me in other ways to incorporate art on campus.”

Kelly Paladin, graphic designer at SCC, participated in the event. “Our campus is already beautiful – the Paint a Planter activity brings a new kind of character to campus by getting faculty, staff and students involved in its beautification. I enjoyed getting to think outside the box and putting together a design that will brighten our campus a little bit more,” Kelly Paladin said.

Dan Porter believes this was a great way to start supporting and promoting the academics on campus. 

The grounds department is currently working with the art department to have the community create art on campus. They are also working with the biology department on getting students outside to utilize the campus’ resources for tangible, real-life models for ecology and biology classes.

“Next, I plan on reaching out to the science department about incorporating a weather station on campus and see what ideas they have that the grounds department can support.”
