SCC Baseball Roundup

Before postseason play began on Wednesday, Head Coach Chris Gober knew the key for extending their season. “Pitching well and playing defense are important, but our biggest concern is hitting.”

SCC pitched well in the Region XVI tournament, but they could not muster the run support to knock off the higher-seeded teams. The SCC pitching staff, starting with sophomore Spencer Pugh, was able to hold the high-powered JeffCo offense to just four runs.

In game two, the Cougars held Three Rivers to just two runs, when they scored no less than six in their four regular season meetings. However, the Cougars could not put together any of their six hits to push a run across the plate.

The Cougars entered the Region XVI tournament on a bit of a high note. SCC won the last game of a four game series against regional opponent Maple Woods. Maple Woods took the first three games of the series including a 6-5 come-from-behind win on SCC’s Sophomore Night. Game four looked like more of the same as Maple Woods jumped out to a 5-0 lead. However, the Cougars battled back for the 10-9 win.

Sophomore Zach Herman had four hits in the game and drove in four runs including what turned out to be the game winner in the eighth inning. Freshman Cambron Womack had a two-RBI double of his own.

The star of the game was sophomore Austin Boden. In five at bats, Boden had four doubles and four RBIs. “In my time here, I have never seen that before,” said Coach Gober.

SCC Baseball finishes the year 10-34 overall, 6-22 in Region XVI play.
