SCC to host Global Days events Feb. 26-27

All activities will take place in the auditorium of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building unless otherwise noted.

Global Days recognize the diversity on campus and throughout the world in a fun and educational way.

SCC Cultures of the World Festival
11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26
Delve into other cultures by sampling ethnic fare, viewing traditional crafts and clothing, listening to other countries’ music, and playing new and interesting games. SCC’s English as a Second Language and international students will explain the showcases. This event will take place in Scooter’s Place in the Student Center.

Study Abroad in Cannes
1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26
Denise McCracken, professor of foreign language, will present on a study aboard opportunity in Cannes, France. She will accompany students to southern France where they will study at the Collège International de Cannes in June 2014. The Collège offers coursework in an immersion environment and serves students representing a wide range of nationalities. Weekend excursions take students to the picturesque towns of Provence as well as Principality of Monaco. The school is located in a quiet area of Cannes overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and offers on-site dorm rooms, free Internet access, Wi-Fi and a dining hall. 

“Off White Lies” Film
7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26
The film “Off White Lies” is a story of a father and his daughter during the 2006 war between Israel and Lebanon. 

Making Things in Madagascar
10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27
Life on the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar differs from the life most of us are familiar with in the United States. William Griffin, SCC professor of anthropology, will discuss the economics of daily life for the people of Madagascar in terms of how they produce the things needed in a non-industrial context. Consideration will also be given to how these productions are damaging what is left of the tropical rain forest in that country.

Intimate Partner Violence in Immigrant Communities
11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27
This presentation will cover the issue of intimate partner violence. Specifically, it will cover the barriers and needs of immigrant victims. Discussion will include the basics of intimate partner violence and the similarities and differences for the immigrant community. The discussion will cover the barriers in accessing services and legal and cultural barriers that victims face.

“Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World” Film
7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27
This film will explore and celebrate the great richness of Islamic art and architectures throughout the world to peer into extraordinary palaces and mosques, decorated with exquisite gardens, ceramics and paintings, to watch the play of light and space, and to sense the sheen of delicate textiles of gold and silver work and of rock crystal and precious gems. 

Desire and Disdain: Egyptian Belly Dance in Social and Historical Context
7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27
The dance form known in the West as “belly dance” occupies an ambiguous, even contradictory, position in the Egyptian consciousness. While the dance is widely beloved by ordinary Egyptians at festive occasion like weddings, professional practitioners of the art are generally stigmatized in mainstream society and viewed as “fallen women.” This lecture traces that history of the dance from the 18th century to the present and explores the complex role of belly dance and its professional practitioners in Egyptian society.
