A History of the Negro Leagues in St. Louis: Giants & St. Louis Stars
Noon Monday, Feb. 3
Dwayne Isgrig will discuss the history of the Negro Leagues in baseball. The St. Louis Giants were a Negro Leagues baseball team from 1905-1921. The team changed owners, and its name for the 1922 season. From 1922-1931, the St. Louis Stars continued in the Negro National League. “42” Film Showing
7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5
The film “42” will be shown in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. The film is about Jackie Robinson, a Negro League baseball player in 1946, who never took racism lying down. Branch Rickey, a Major League team executive, had a bold idea. Rickey recruited Robinson to break the unspoken color line as the first modern African-American Major League player. As both anticipated, this proved to be a major challenge for Robinson and his family, as they endured unrelenting racist hostility on and off the field, from players and fans alike. As Robinson struggles against his nature to endure such abuse without complaint, he finds allies and hope where he least expects it.

Rayvon Owen will perform music in Scooter’s Place in the Student Center. Owen is an R&B, pop artist out of Richmond, Va.

“Celebrating African-American History Through Dance,” Arrive Dance Company Performance
7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12
Arrive Dance Company will perform in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. Arrive Dance Company, under the direction of Stacey Gerst and Jamell Jacobs, is a St. Louis based company that has a unique blend of jazz, modern, contemporary and hip hop styles. Arrive Dance Company offers a fresh and innovative concept for professional dance both locally and outside the St. Louis area by challenging their dancers to be strong in more than one area, as well as providing choreographic opportunities within the company.
