SCC to host International Education Week events Nov. 12-13

Culture Shock Student ESL Panel
10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12
If you have ever visited another country, you know how unsettling, yet exhilarating, it can be. SCC international students and immigrants will describe the “culture shock” they experienced moving to the United States. It is a chance to travel around the world and learn of other cultures all in one short presentation.

Water in Kenya and Haiti: A Presentation by the Shoeman
11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12
It’s amazing the difference some old shoes can make. George P. Hutchings is a former marine sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps who won a Purple Heart and is a humanitarian who founded Eagle Wing Ministries to provide aid in foreign countries such as Kenya. About five years ago he started Shoeman Water Projects when he saw the need for water superseded all other physical needs.

Hutchings, also known as “The Shoeman,” will talk about how he uses shoes to make a difference in the water in Kenya and Haiti.

Human Trafficking and Its Effect on Women and Children, hosted by Vi Rajagopalan
1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12
This presentation by Vi Rajagopalan, SCC associate professor of psychology, and Kimberlee Vaughn, SCC associate professor of psychology, will examine the expanded definition of trafficking, which covers trafficking of women and children for all types of exploitation that is non-consensual and exploitative. This session opens one’s eyes to the fact that human trafficking is not something that happens thousands of miles away, but happens within our borders.

Taste of Egyptian Dance
2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12
Have you ever been curious about Egyptian dance? Come learn about the different regions of Egypt and their dances, with video, demonstration and audience participation.

Film showing of “Koran by Heart,” hosted by Laura Al Albani
7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12
One hundred and ten kids from the Islamic world are chosen and arrive in Cairo for the world ‘s oldest Koran reciting contest. This film follows two boys from Senegal and Tajikistan, and a little girl from Maldives – who go head-to-head with kids nearly twice their age in pronunciation, recitation and perfected memorization of the Qur’an. Even as their own future hangs in the balance, they are caught between fundamentalist and moderate visions of Islam. This film is shown as part of the Muslim Journeys grant from the NEH.

Study Abroad in Costa Rica
11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13
Professor Macro Romero of St. Louis Community College at Meramec has led numerous study abroad programs to Costa Rica and other Spanish-speaking destinations. In 2014, he will invite SCC students to join his popular three-week immersion summer program, which includes Spanish classes during the week, lodging with Costa Rican families and weekend visits to important scenic, environmental and cultural destinations throughout Costa Rica.

Study Abroad in Canterbury
Noon Wednesday, Nov. 13
Dan Rezny, associate professor of history, will present a study abroad opportunity in Canterbury, England, and discuss his experience leading the program. Students will also discuss their study abroad experience in Canterbury.

Study Abroad in Cannes
1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13
Denise McCracken, professor of foreign language, will present on a study aboard opportunity in Cannes, France. She will accompany students to southern France where they will study at the Collège International de Cannes in June 2014. The Collège offers coursework in an immersion environment and serves students representing a wide range of nationalities. Weekend excursions take students to the picturesque towns of Provence as well as Principality of Monaco. The school is located in a quiet area of Cannes overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and offers on-site dorm rooms, free Internet access, Wi-Fi and a dining hall.

7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13
In the film “Le Havre,” an African Boy arrives by cargo ship in the port city of Le Havre and an aging shoe shiner takes pity on the child by welcoming him into his home.
