SCC Receives Grant From Ameren Missouri for Mobile Computer Lab
Published: 06/27/2012
“Ameren Missouri is proud to support the pre-engineering program at SCC by providing this grant,” said Scott Liebel, supervising engineer at Ameren Missouri, and SCC Foundation board member. “We understand the future need for engineers in today's society, and SCC provides an excellent opportunity for local area students to be introduced to this field."
The SCC pre-engineering program provides up to two years of transferred credit toward a Bachelor of Science degree in various engineering disciplines at many four-year institutions. Pre-engineering students interact with the community by going on monthly field trips and attending guest lectures on a weekly basis. Transfers to four-year universities have been seamless for the program, in part due to the high standard of SCC’s math and science curriculum, and enrollment has tripled in the past six years, said David Niermann, SCC program coordinator and associate professor of pre-engineering.
“The Ameren grant significantly benefits the pre-engineering program in several ways, especially in helping fund the computerization of our physics/engineering lab,” said Niermann. “This grant promotes Ameren’s recognition of the outstanding value of our program, which provides low-cost, high-quality technical education in critical STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) areas.”
