SCC to Host Child Abuse Prevention Events April 16-19

“We hear about child abuse in the news, but many people don’t know much about child abuse, how common it is or what the signs are,” said Lisa Stoner, SCC associate professor of psychology. “Often people don’t know what to do if a child is being abused or what happens if they report a suspected case of child abuse.”

In these sessions, participants will learn about the signs and impact of abuse as well as the investigatory process and the current legal implications. In addition, participants will learn about the resources available in our area to help abused children.

1-2:30 p.m. Monday, April 16
Ellen Teller, M.Ed., LCSW, executive director of the Child Center, will speak about the interview process of a child in child abuse cases. Participants will also hear from a forensic interviewer.

7-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 17
Erin Merryn, author and activist, will speak about her own experience of being sexually assaulted and raped as a child. Merryn is the author of the books, “Stolen Innocence” and “Living for Today,” both about incest and rape. She is the force behind passing her own law, “Erin’s Law,” which will educate children in Illinois public schools on sexual abuse. She has made numerous media appearances, including “Oprah” and “Good Morning America,” and in 2011 she spoke at the U.S. Department of Education’s national conference. 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, April 18
Dr. Jamie Kondis, child abuse pediatrician at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, will speak about the types of child abuse and neglect, what to do if you suspect that someone is the victim of abuse and how to work together to prevent child abuse in our communities.

Noon-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19
Mary Kay Kreider, MSW, program coordinator for Crisis Nursery – Wentzville, will speak about the purpose of Crisis Nursery and the impact it has on the community. Participants will also hear from a social worker and a woman who has benefitted from services at Crisis Nursery.
