SCC Library Completes "Spanish That Works ... In the Library" Grant Program
Published: 08/25/2011
“Spanish That Works” is a text-based course in basic conversational Spanish developed specifically for librarians and library staff. The course uses a practical and fun approach, with library-specific vocabulary, pared-down grammar and speaking practice with a partner. Participants also role-played real-life interactions, like asking for a library card or guiding a patron to materials.
“Most of the staff were very motivated to learn Spanish, and some of them even continued their learning by enrolling in a Spanish 101 class,” said Stephanie Tolson, SCC dean of learning resources. “I think it will be helpful for all of them to at least have a basic understanding of the Spanish language.”
Tolson submitted the grant application to the Missouri State Library in January 2011. In March, the State Library awarded $194,138 to approximately 30 public and academic libraries. The SCC Library was awarded $3,897 for the “Spanish That Works” project. Jeanette Boria, SCC adult education and literacy project coordinator, was responsible for the Spanish language instruction of SCC library staff members.
“’Spanish That Works’ has been a big success in libraries that have used it, and many more libraries will be starting courses soon,” said Tolson. “We are grateful to the Missouri State Library for affording us this opportunity to serve our Spanish-speaking community.”
The Institute of Museum and Library Services supported the project under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
