SCC Adjunct Philosophy Professor to Host Lecture at SCC March 30

The lecture will explore the relations between knowledge and justice, especially focusing on social science disciplines with policy-making influence over development economics. McCollum will focus on the work of Amartya Sen, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, as he develops an account of the social sciences less susceptible to elite influence, particularly drawing attention to the institutional blind spots an elite bias can create. Following McCollum's presentation, Jon Bowman, SCC assistant professor of philosophy, will give a 10-15 minute response. The session will close with a 30-minute question and answer session.

Jim McCollum is in his fifth year in the philosophy doctoral program at St. Louis University.  He earned his master’s in philosophy from the University of Memphis and received his bachelor’s in philosophy from the University of Akron. His areas of specialization are social and political philosophy and pragmatism. McCollum also studied the history of philosophy, particularly modern philosophy. He has served as an adjunct professor at SCC for the last two years during his doctoral work.

The lecture will take place in the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building auditorium on the SCC campus, located at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville. The lecture, organized by the SCC philosophy department and Philosophy Club 729, is free and open to the public.
