Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to Speak at SCC Commencement

Published: 03/09/2011

“SCC’s graduates will be both honored by the Governor’s presence and inspired by his address at this transitional moment in their lives,” said John McGuire, Ph.D., SCC president. “Gov. Nixon is a strong supporter of higher education in general and community colleges in particular, and the Governor is firmly committed to making a college education accessible for every Missouri citizen.”

More than 600 students are eligible to graduate, including students who meet the completion requirements for certificates or degrees as of last December or for March, May and August of the year 2011, according to Kathy Brockgreitens-Gober, dean of enrollment services.

Gov. Nixon was at SCC last March to announce a $1.1 million Training for Tomorrow grant to help prepare Missourians for careers in higher demand fields.

Gov. Nixon is serving his first term as governor of Missouri. Garnering the highest margin of victory for a non-incumbent governor in 44 years, Nixon was overwhelmingly elected by Missourians as their 55th governor on Nov. 4, 2008. Among his educational priorities, Gov. Nixon is focusing on extending the A+ scholarship program, increasing the number of graduates in Missouri and keeping college tuition affordable. Nixon received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia. For more information, visit http://governor.mo.gov.
