SCC Celebrates International Education Week Nov. 14-17

The International Education Week program is sponsored by the SCC Global Education and Multicultural Programming committees. The majority of the events will take place in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building on the college’s campus in Cottleville.

Events will take place Nov. 14-17 in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building, unless otherwise noted.
 
Monday, Nov. 14
11 a.m. – Holidays Around the World Event
Enjoy a sampling of food, history and culture from SCC’s international students. This will take place in the Plaza Bistro of the Student Center.

Tuesday, Nov. 15
10 a.m. – Divided by a Single Language: Adventures in Canterbury (Presentation)
Karen Jones, SCC professor of English, will discuss her trip to Canterbury, England.

1 p.m. – Lessons From Cuba (Presentation)
Paul Roesler, SCC professor of political science, will share his experiences from his summer trip to Cuba.

7 p.m. – “Le hérisson” (Film)
“Le hérisson” (2009), French for “the hedgehog,” is a French film with English subtitles, and will be hosted by Denise McCracken, SCC professor of foreign language. This film is rated PG.

Wednesday, Nov. 16
10 a.m. – Culture Shock: Adjusting to Life in America (Student Panel)
Becky Ingraham, SCC professor of reading, will moderate a student panel made up of English as a Second Language students, who will discuss what it is like adjusting to life in America.

Noon – The Effect of Two Urban Cultures (Presentation)
Vi Rajagopalan, SCC associate professor of psychology, will share her experience coming to America as a young, married Indian woman, and the differences she found between individualistic and collectivistic cultures.

7 p.m. – “Metropolis” (Film)
"Metropolis" (2001) is a Japanese anime film in English about a world far in the future where robots and humans live together, but not in harmony. Hosted by Darren Osburn, SCC associate professor of communication. This film is rated TV-14.

Thursday, Nov. 17
7 p.m. – “Lion of the Desert” (Film)
"Lion of the Desert" (1981), is an Arabic film in English that follows the story of Omar Mukhtar, an Arab Muslim rebel who fought against the Italian conquest of Libya in World War I. Laura Chehade, SCC adjunct faculty member, will host the film. This film is rated PG.
