SCC to Offer New Music Class, "Music in the Americas" Next Spring

Published: 09/30/2010

The college credit class will be taught by John L. Walker, SCC associate professor of music. “Music in the Americas” will be a survey of music cultures found in the Americas, focusing on imported and indigenous music along with additional selected music traditions from this hemisphere, including African-American and Latin American music among others. This course is for general students as well as music students.

“You don’t have to be a music major to take this class,” said Walker. “It’s a cross-disciplinary course and it’s open to all students who would like to open their eyes to a new culture, not only in music, but in customs, politics and history, too.”

Walker said he plans on taking several approaches in teaching the class, including lectures, projects, documentaries and listening to music. The course will focus on three main areas, including the Aztec, Mayan, Incan and other cultures before and after the Spanish conquest, the construction of folk and popular music of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the history and development of nationalistic styles by way of European art music.
