SCC to Host "Sustainapalooza," Week-Long Celebration of College's Sustainability Efforts Aug. 30-Sept. 2

Sustainapalooza is the kick-off event for the campus-wide single stream recycling that will begin at SCC this fall. SCC’s “Green Team” committee, headed by Chris Breitmeyer, dean of math, science and health, secured a $25,000 grant from the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District to pay for the bins, liners, composters and an educational campaign. The team is a member of the Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

SUSTAINAPALOOZA SCHEDULE:
Events will take place Aug. 30-Sept. 2 in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building, unless otherwise noted.
 
11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30
Sustainapalooza Kick-Off Event: Griffin House Concert, Green Game Show and Vendor Fair.

Celebrate the start of Sustainapalooza with a free concert by Griffin House, a Wheel-of-Fortune-type game show with an environmentally-friendly theme, and a vendor fair featuring booths of local companies showcasing their green efforts in the community. All of these events will take place on the Campus Plaza at SCC.
 
Noon and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1
Presentation by documentary filmmaker of “FUEL,” Josh Tickell
 
Author and film director Josh Tickell will discuss his personal sustainability efforts, which include his award-winning documentary, “FUEL,” two books about sustainable energy, several social impact campaigns, and two upcoming films about alternative education and world population issues.

Showing of documentary “FUEL”
 
“FUEL,” winner of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for Best Documentary, is a documentary about America’s current energy situation and a possible solution to its dependence on oil in the form of alternative energy.

Our Grounds Story: Past, Present and Future
 
SCC Grounds Supervisor Dan Porter will discuss the sustainable improvements in the SCC grounds crew’s procedures in the past six years, and their plans to implement more sustainability efforts in the future.
 
1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2
Rabbit Run Park and SCC Partnership
Chris Breitmeyer, SCC’s dean of math, science and health, will discuss the development of SCC’s partnership with the City of St. Peters to build an outdoor classroom in Rabbit Run Park. The classroom will support learning and undergraduate research.
