SCC Young Democrats to Host Panel Discussion on April 27

Panel discussion invites questions on health care bill, jobs and stimulus packages

A panel of SCC political science faculty members will discuss topics such as the health care bill, jobs and unemployment, and the economic outcomes of the stimulus packages for home, auto and banking industries. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and discuss issues they have heard or read about in the news. The panel members will speak from their academic backgrounds and individual perspectives.
 
The panel will include:
 
Paul Roesler, professor of political science, has been a faculty member at SCC since 1993, and also has lived and taught in Spain and the Czech Republic. He teaches American government, Middle East politics and international relations and has led study tours to England and central Europe, Greece, Italy and others. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia and enjoys relating his course material to current events. 
 
Jack Happe, adjunct instructor of political science, has been teaching at SCC for eight years. He also has taught public administration at Webster University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and taught political science at St. Louis Community College. He has both a Master of Science degree in public administration and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Happe is a Vietnam combat veteran who earned an Army Commendation Medal. Following his service, he worked for 25 years with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Army Aviation Systems Command as a system manager for the Black Hawk Helicopter System, where he earned an Outstanding Performance Award.
 
Nathan Daugherty, adjunct instructor of political science, has been teaching political science classes at SCC since 2007 and is one of the advisors for SCC’s Young Democrats. He also teaches at Maryville University and St. Louis Community College. He has a Master of Public Affairs degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Daugherty has lived and worked in both Ireland and Senegal and enjoys sharing his experiences with students.
 
“The event is an opportunity for people to ask questions and get answers from educated sources,” said Danny Patterson, president of the Young Democrats student organization at SCC. “We hear so many different points of view on these subjects, it can sometimes be challenging to become educated on the facts.”
 
The Young Democrats student organization at SCC was established in fall 2008 to provide political and social awareness about democracy through discussion, education and volunteerism to its members, the college as a whole and the community at large.
