SCC Announces Events for Women's History Month and Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month

March events also will mark Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month (traditionally celebrated in May, however SCC will observe the occasion early to reach students who are on campus during the spring semester). 
 
Lecture and Book Signing by Loung Ung, Cambodian Genocide Survivor and Author
Loung Ung, Cambodian genocide survivor, best-selling author and activist will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3 in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. A book signing of Ung’s “First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers,” (winner of the 2001 Asian Pacific American Award for Literature) will be in SCC’s Café/Bookstore following the presentation. Books will be available for purchase with cash or check only. Ung also is the author of “Lucky Child: A Daughter of Cambodia Reunites With the Sister She Left Behind,” and is a national spokesperson for “Campaign for a Landmine-Free World.” For more information, visit www.creativewell.com/ung.html. 
 
“Students Fight Back” Seminar and Self-Defense Instruction by Erin Weed
Erin Weed, self-defense expert, author and founder of “Girls Fight Back!” will present her “Students Fight Back” seminar at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. After the murder of a sorority sister, Weed began educating others on self-defense, and has been featured in “The New York Times,” “The Washington Post” and “The Chicago Tribune.” For more information, visit www.bass-schuler.com/erin_weed.php4. Weed’s “Students Fight Back” seminar is for male and female college students, in an attempt to bring the campus together as a community to end violence at America’s universities. In this program, students learn how to be a hard target of crime, how to secure apartments from break-ins, how to detect violent people, trust intuition and look out for the safety of fellow students. The session will include interactive physical self-defense instruction. 
 
Electro-Jazz Performance by Dana Leong
Dana Leong, electro-jazz cellist/composer, will perform at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 25, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. Leong’s music is a fusion of hip-hop, jazz and electronics. For more information on Dana Leong, visitwww.houseofwally.com/dl.htm. 
 
“Tracy and Jess: Living With Early Onset Alzheimer’s” Film and Panel Discussion 
Former SCC student and employee Jim Dreyer will present his film, “Tracy and Jess: Living With Early Onset Alzheimer’s,” at noon and 7 p.m. Friday, March 26. A panel discussion will follow, with panelists to include Jim and Jess Dreyer, and a representative from the Alzheimer’s Association. Artwork and photographs by Jess Dreyer also will be on display. This event is cosponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association of St. Charles County and the SCC Multicultural Programming Committee.
 
Acoustic Music Performance by Meg Allison
Meg Allison, storyteller, emerging acoustic artist and season five finalist of the USA network’s “Nashville Star,” will perform at noon Wednesday, March 31, in the Café/Bookstore. For more information, visit www.bass-schuler.com/megallison.php4.
