SCC to Offer 10 Scholarships For New Patient Care Technician Program in Spring 2011

This new non-credit certificate program is a one-semester course that prepares students to work in a hospital, assisted living or long-term care environment under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Students are trained to perform clinical skills and other tasks related to direct patient care.

“The Patient Care Technician Program is fast-paced and designed for the dedicated student who is interested in working in the hospital industry,” said Mary Stassi, SCC health occupations coordinator. “Once a student has completed this program, they will be certified for long-term and acute care, which will benefit them in their search for employment.”

Only 10 students will be admitted into the program. Tuition for the Patient Care Technician Program is $875 plus the cost of the required textbook. The scholarship will cover $500 of the tuition and does not cover the cost of the textbook. The student will be responsible for the other $375, plus the cost of the textbook, due at the time of registration.

Students who meet the course requirements and are interested in applying for a scholarship should stop by Room 1442 of the Administration Building, or call 636-922-8295, for an application. Once completed, students must return the application with a copy of their high school diploma or GED certificate and two letters of recommendation in a sealed envelope to the same location.

All scholarship applications are due no later than 3 p.m. Jan. 7, 2011, however, scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, as well as on an as-needed basis. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

If a student is awarded a scholarship, they must register for the Patient Care Technician Program and pay their part of the tuition in full once they are notified or they will forfeit the scholarship. The scholarships are non-refundable and non-transferrable.

The Spring 2011 program begins Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, and ends on Friday, May 13, 2011. The class is held every Monday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. with a lab each Wednesday from 3-5 p.m. Students will also attend a clinical every Friday from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Final exams will be given the week of May 9-13, 2011. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Certificate of Completion from SCC and will sit for the Missouri State Certified Nurse Assistant final exam, which is included in the tuition and course schedule.
