SCC to Hold Open Auditions for "Four Room Asylum" Dec. 6-7
Published: 11/22/2010
Director Lonna Wilke will hold open auditions at 7 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 6-7, in Room 108 of the Donald D. Shook Fine Arts Building on the SCC campus in Cottleville. Callbacks will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, in the same location. Center Stage Theatre invites SCC students and community residents to audition. Parts are available for four men and three women. There are no parts available for children.
Co-written by Ashton Jaymz, former SCC student, in collaboration with professional playwrights Richard Haase and Anthony Charles Kieber, “Four Room Asylum” is a manifestation of original work spawned from literary adaptation and collaborative writing. A new course offered by the SCC English Department explores adaptations in dramatic literature. After studying the tradition and practice of adaptation, members of the class will engage in staged readings and acting workshops. The process culminates with this production. A centerpiece of the course will be the psychological dramas of “Four Room Asylum,” which include the following one acts:
- “Healthcare,” by Jaymz and Haase, based on “Dialogue Between a Priest and a Dying Man” by The Marquis de Sade.
- “The Monster,” by Haase and Kieber, based on the play, “The Stronger,” by August Strindberg.
- “Interrogation,” by Haase, based on “The Grand Inquisitor” from the novel, “The Brothers Karamazov,” by Fyodor Dostoevsky and on the apocryphal text, “The Gospel of Thomas.”
- “The Tea Party,” by Haase and Jaymz, based on the play, “Miss Julie,” by August Stindberg.
“Four Room Asylum” will be performed in the theater of the Fine Arts Building at 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, April 13-16, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17.
