SCC to Host Feb. 10 Lecture on Responsible Use of Facebook, Myspace
Published: 01/12/2010
The lecture, “Trouble Online: Campus Computing and the Law,” will be in the auditorium of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building on the SCC campus in Cottleville. C.L. Lindsay, a former attorney and current executive director for the Coalition for Student & Academic Rights (CO-STAR), will discuss how inappropriate content on Facebook and MySpace can be detrimental to a student’s success.
Lindsay will discuss plagiarism and intellectual property online, how the content of your social networking pages can undermine future job opportunities, the dangers of Internet predators obtaining personal information and the repercussions of posting underage drinking on the Internet.
Lindsay is a nationally recognized expert and leader in the field of student rights and academic freedom. He has appeared on national television, radio and has been featured in countless regional and national publications. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Denison University, and he received his J.D. from the University of Michigan. In his spare time, he teaches courses in law and literature at the University of Pennsylvania.
“Students are using social networking daily; sometimes they are so excited to upload pictures of themselves with their friends that they don’t think about the long term implications,” said Kelley Pfeiffer, SCC student activities coordinator. “C.L. is a fun speaker with the law background to have the credibility to get the point across to our students to make smart decisions now that will positively impact their future.”
The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Pfeiffer, at 636-922-8544 or kpfeiffer@stchas.edu.
