"Go Green" With New SCC Continuing Education Courses

“More and more people are becoming conscious of the environment in which they live and work,” said Kathy Stearns, program specialist for continuing education at SCC. “The personal enrichment courses are great for those who may want to learn tips on how to live a greener lifestyle, and the career training courses are for people who are interested in career development.”
The following instructor-led personal enrichment courses are available on SCC’s campus in Cottleville:
- Alternative Building and Green Architecture – Participants will learn alternatives to traditional home building methods, as well as an insight into environmental, economical, social, and governmental influences of modern housing. The course meets 6:30-9 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 14-Nov. 18. The cost is $75.
- How “Green” Are You? – Participants will examine the different types of solutions to solve some environmental issues. They will discover what is in our air, water, and soil, and how it affects everything from the food we eat to our health. The course meets 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays, Sept. 12-19. The cost is $29.
The following online career certificate programs are offered via the Web through SCC’s partnership with Gatlin Education Services. These courses have open enrollment, and begin individually when a student registers.
- Senior Certified Sustainability Professional – This program is designed to prepare students to become leaders in the green collar economy. The cost is $2,495 and includes the certification exam.
- Certified Green Supply Chain Professional – Students will learn to create sustainability programs and apply “lean and green” manufacturing strategies. The cost is $1,595 and includes the certification exam.
- Certified Indoor Air Quality Manager (CIAQM) – This program is perfect for facility managers, building engineers, and health and safety officers who want to improve the indoor air quality (IAQ) of buildings. The cost is $795.
- Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE) – This program teaches all the practical steps needed in order to make indoor environmental assessments, including how to take samples and how to resolve common IAQ problems. The cost is $895.
- Building Analyst Quick Start: BPI BA Certification – This unique bundle of two very popular programs, Principles of Green Buildings and Performing Comprehensive Building Assessments, will prepare students to move into a new career in the ever growing green building field. The cost is $1,195.
- Wind Energy Apprentice – Through three courses – Basic Electrical Theory, Hydraulics and Pneumatics, and Wind Energy Principles – students will develop an understanding of the fundamental principles of wind energy technology. The cost is $2,195.
- Biofuel Production Operations – Over the next few decades, many advances will be made in the field of biofuel, and hundreds of new facilities will be built for production of this type of fuel, leading to many new biofuel-production jobs. The cost is $2,595.
- Natural Gas Plant Operations – There is a growing demand for natural gas plant operators who work in gas-producing establishments. This program provides the fundamental technical background for students who want to enter this field. The cost is $2,595.
- Performing Comprehensive Building Assessments – This program is designed to introduce students to the comprehensive building assessment process. The cost is $695.
- Principles of Green Buildings – The course is designed to teach an individual in the building, remodeling, or trade industry the principles they must know to make buildings perform more efficiently. The cost is $595.
SCC’s Continuing Education Department has partnered with Gatlin Education Services (GES), the world’s largest provider of Web-based instructor supported training to colleges and universities. These open enrollment programs are designed to provide the skills necessary to acquire professional caliber positions for many in-demand occupations, all within a three-month delivery window.
