SCC Multicultural Programming Offers Mix of Education, Culture

Nitro Latin Jazz Band to Perform at SCC During Hispanic Heritage Month in September
Multicultural events are open to the community. They are sponsored by SCC’s Multicultural Programming Committee, a group of SCC faculty and staff that coordinates events in an effort to broaden students’ perspectives and enhance their education. This year SCC will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, and Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a series of speakers, performers, musicians, and presentations.
SCC’s upcoming 2009-10 multicultural events:
Native American Heritage Month – November
- Bill Miller, award-winning musician, will perform his music and will speak at noon, Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. For more information on Bill Miller, visit http://www.houseofwally.com/bm.htm.
- “The Battle for Whiteclay,” the 2008 film documentary about the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9 in auditorium of the Social Sciences Building.
- “Forgotten People: Native America,” a panel discussion with four Native Americans who will discuss the reality of living on a Native reservation and what issues Native Americans face daily for survival, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building.
- Michael Murphy, recording artist and concert hall musician, will present a concert emphasizing his ties to American folk music at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building.
- “The True Story of the First Thanksgiving,” a lunch event featuring traditional, authentic foods, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in Rooms 205/206 of the Student Center.
Black History Month – February
- “Walkin’ Cane,” a blues singer, songwriter, and slide guitarist, will perform at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, in the Café/Bookstore. For more information on “Walkin’ Cane,” visit http://www.sonicbids.com/walkincane.
Women’s History Month – March
- Loung Ung, best-selling author, Cambodian genocide survivor, and activist, will lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. For more information on Loung Ung, visit http://www.creativewell.com/ung.html.

Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month – March (SCC will observe Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month in March, instead of the traditional celebratory month of May, while students are on campus.)

Other Multicultural Events
- “Meet Mary Pleasant,” a documentary and lecture by Susheel Bibbs, will be part of SCC’s Democracy Days program, held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. “Meet Mary Pleasant” is the 2007 historical performance documentary about 19th century African-American activist Mary Pleasant, who is known as the “Mother of Civil Rights in California.” For more information, visit http://www.stchas.edu/democracydays.
- “SCC Idol,” SCC’s own version of “American Idol,” will be a singing competition among SCC students and a fundraiser for multicultural programming. SCC Idol will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building.
- “Holidays Around the World,” a celebration of the various winter holidays observed around the world, will be presented by SCC student organizations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the lobby of the Student Center.
