SCC Business Professor Receives 2009 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award

“Joe demonstrates an extremely strong commitment to moving both the division and the college forward in a variety of innovative ways,” said Jill Riethmayer, dean of SCC’s Business and Social Sciences Division. “He continually seeks opportunities to bring real-life experiences into the classroom and is extremely adept at integrating technology into the courses he teaches.”
Hartnett, of Chesterfield, Mo., has been a full-time faculty member at SCC since 2000 and chair of the Business and Computer Science Department since 2001. He was voted Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year in 2009 by SCC’s faculty. Hartnett was the founder and CEO of Weather Guard Inc., a manufacturer of insulation products, which was acquired by Louisiana-Pacific, a building products company. At LP, he served as a division manager reporting to the CEO. He left LP to pursue his love of teaching, teaching at St. Louis Community College and Fontbonne University before taking his current position at SCC, where he teaches business and marketing classes.
Hartnett has a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Louis University, a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and a Master of Arts degree in educational psychology from New Mexico State University. He currently is a member of the American Marketing Association.
The Emerson Excellence in Teaching Awards program recognizes more than 100 teachers from kindergarten to college professors who are examples of excellence in the field of education in the St. Louis metropolitan area. The awards ceremony was held on Sunday, Nov. 1, at The Sheldon.
